Every Tuesday we send out the MedComms Networking email newsletter to subscribers. It includes brief commentary on what we're doing and planning, and highlights relevant news to encourage sharing of information, experiences and ideas and to stimulate discussion. The text and links included below, by definition, were accurate on the day of publication, but may then become outdated.

    MedComms Networking - 30 July 2019

I'm giving this weekly newsletter a rest over the next couple of weeks. All being well, what passes for "normal" service will resume on 20 August. I'm doing my public duty and attending for jury service instead. That aside, I'm here throughout as needed, of course, if you've questions I can help with or suggestions for future activities we can pursue together that will benefit this MedComms community. I might just be a tad slower to respond during the working day than usual. But hey, that's what the working night is for, in this age of flexible working!

Importantly, our next Open Careers Event for anyone who wants to know more about MedComms, will be on 10 September back at Manchester University. These careers events are well-proven now and have helped lots of previous attendees who now happily work in and around MedComms. Please help spread the word. We expect 40-50 representatives from 14 leading agencies to join us.

Talking of wannabes, Rebecca Dawson recently completed a post-doctoral position at the University of Liverpool and is keen to find a position in Medical Communications. She shared some frustrations on Linkedin and sparked some comments.

Rebecca wrote; "I'm desperately trying to break into medical communications as a medical writer and I was recently asked to complete a writing test. I gave it my all but unfortunately I wasn't successful, although they said my writing style shows some potential. The agency was unable to give me more specific feedback so without knowing where I'm going wrong, I'm finding it really hard to get it right!"

It seems to me this is a depressingly common complaint from #MedComms wannabes and is raised at many of our events. Is it really too much for them to expect some constructive feedback on writing tests? I know some agencies/individuals are very helpful but how do we address this across the #MedComms business community, raise the bar generally, and establish better practices as the norm?

Is everyone really just too busy and, if so, is that really good enough? Please share your thoughts. And best of luck to Rebecca.

Maybe it'll do me good, though, to stop ranting for a couple of weeks and focus on something else!

Remember, details of all our activities are kept bang up-to-date at or give me a shout at any time if you've any questions, comments or suggestions.
