Every Tuesday we send out the MedComms Networking email newsletter to subscribers. It includes brief commentary on what we're doing and planning, and highlights relevant news to encourage sharing of information, experiences and ideas and to stimulate discussion. The text and links included below, by definition, were accurate on the day of publication, but may then become outdated.

    MedComms Networking - 23 July 2019

Last week we recorded another three short Writing Bites with specialist writer and trainer, John Dixon, for your enjoyment and education. That's 27 bites so far and we've more coming.

  • While or whilst [2.11 minutes]

  • Between or among [2.43 minutes]

  • In to or into [3.17 minutes]

The complete series of Writing Bites is freely available at and on our MedComms Channel on YouTube. We'd love to hear suggestions for future topics.

Here are some links to further reading you may have missed in the past week...

Initialisms, acronyms and abbreviations. Use sparingly! written by Tim Hardman, Managing Director at Niche Science and Technology Ltd

Resolving conflicts of interest in medicine - published by Open Pharma. At a workshop on managing conflicts of interest in medicine, Chris Winchester, CEO of Oxford PharmaGenesis and co-founder of Open Pharma, argued for openness.

How to involve patients in medical publishing: insights from a patient advocate - published by The Publication Plan. Simon Stones gives his view on the practical steps that patients, publishers and the pharmaceutical industry can take to boost patient involvement in research.

Meanwhile we're working on several other activities for the second half of 2019, and here are two important dates to note...

Our next Open Careers Event for anyone who wants to know more about MedComms, will be on 10 September back at Manchester University. These careers events are well-proven now and have helped lots of previous attendees who now happily work in and around MedComms. Please help spread the word. We expect 40-50 representatives from 14 leading agencies to join us.

And the team at StgilesMedical have invited us back for another end-of-year event on 10 December. Home-made mince pies, anyone? This year we'll talk about Involving patients in research and medical writing and we fully expect another packed room. So, as usual, just ping me an email confirming your current position if you'd like to join us. I'll keep the web page updated as programme details are confirmed.

PLEASE NOTE: the weekly webinars will stop over the Summer. They'll restart on 2 October and run through to 4 December. Let me know if you've suggestions for speakers, topics or if you'd like to volunteer to get involved.

Remember, details of all our activities are kept bang up-to-date at or give me a shout at any time if you've any questions, comments or suggestions.
