    WEEKLY COMMENT

Every Tuesday we send out the MedComms Networking email newsletter to subscribers. It includes brief commentary on what we're doing and planning, and highlights relevant news to encourage sharing of information, experiences and ideas and to stimulate discussion. The text and links included below, by definition, were accurate on the day of publication, but may then become outdated.

    MedComms Networking - 19 December 2017

    Hi

Time to reflect on 2017. My highlight was the 10 year party! How the heck did we survive 10 years? Begging, borrowing and... well, whatever it took. We're certainly in a very different place now, so a huge thanks to the current Sponsors and all contributors. Without them, none of this could happen. Please don't stop! Those of you who sit on the side lines - please get off them and join in. I'm still keen to see more of you use MedComms Networking as a platform to support your own local activities.

I've always shared content as freely as possible, as widely as possible, even if only the presentation slides from meetings. This past year we've really stepped up a gear. NetworkPharma.tv is definitely taking shape now, providing everyone, everywhere, with free access to a growing library of relevant webcasts. Thanks to all involved, particularly the many expert speakers who've journeyed to Oxford to stand in front of "that door". Our next Brunch Club meeting is 10 January when we'll talk about continuing medical education and development (CME/CPD) with Eugene Pozniak, Sophie Wilson and Julie Van Onselen. Please join us.

And our new virtual meetings have already involved hundreds of attendees. Those can only get bigger and better. Join us for number three on 1 March, Digital features in medical publications: Where are we now?

On a related note, freelancers who subscribe to the MedComms Workbook from across the world can now meet "virtually" each week using Zoom video conferencing, sharing experiences and providing support for each other.

And we can - and do - make a real difference, not just for individuals but for the overall MedComms business. This year we ran several meetings, real and virtual, with Brian Goode and his team at the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), including a highly illuminating meeting with rights managers from leading publishers. As a result CCC have just launched a new RightsLink pilot to evaluate a new type of use specifically designed for medical communications projects. Publishers already participating include Wiley, Wolters Kluwer, Oxford University Press and BMJ. More are expected over the coming weeks. Check out details here or contact Brian Good directly on email bgoode@copyright.com.

Meanwhile, our FirstMedCommsJob.com service goes from strength to strength. Last week our new workshop, Writing skills for medical writers: what MedComms agencies expect was fully booked in 72 hours. Our new careers guide, The business of medical communications: A guide to getting started in account management will be published in January and the current writers' guide will be updated again in March. Our next Open Careers event is 11 January in Oxford and there are more coming. The Sponsors of this service should all get particularly big hugs.

There's so much more and it can be difficult keeping up, so shout anytime if you've questions, feedback or ideas.

For now I'll wish you a peaceful end to the year and as much success as you can manage, however you define it, in 2018.

    Cheers
